How To Make A Bow Tie

StepsThings You
Will NeedTips and Warnings
1

Find a piece of thick fabric. If you don't want to buy any, use material from unwanted clothes such as denim jeans, a floral dress, etc.
2

Cut the fabric into a shape of a rectangle. The size of this will depend on how big you want your bow to be. Usually, it's good to cut it to a height of 6in / 15cm (which will later be folded over and bunched in the center) and a length of around 4.5in / 11.5cm (just over what will be the final length of the bow tie. If you want to use a different size of fabric, test it by folding it in half, scrunching it into a bow, and taking into account the small trim that will be lost once you sew/hide the edges.
3

Form the bow. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise – inside-out if applicable – and sew the three sides of the rectangle, leaving about 1 inch not sewn. Turn the piece inside-out through the hole, then close the hole with a few small, inconspicuous stitches (like slip stitches) if necessary.
4

Secure the bow shape. Find the center of the rectangle and push the top and the bottom of the fabric into a bow-like shape. Sew it down the middle to hold it in place. If you'd like to hide the stitching, sew a small band around the middle.
5

Add a rubber elastic at the back of the bow. Measure a length of elastic that will fit comfortably around your neck, then sew the center of the elastic to the center of the back of the bow.
6

Test-sew a button at one end of the elastic and sew a buttonhole at the other. This will let you secure the band around your neck. To sew a buttonhole, create a slit in the elastic that the button fits through snugly and sew loops around the edges to prevent them from unraveling.
7

Check for size. If the fit is good, sew the button on permanently. You may also want to sew loops over both ends of the elastic to prevent them from unraveling
